Sick Visits in Washington, DC

The highly skilled staff at Adorn Medical Services, Washington DC, MD, is ready to schedule a sick visit when your child needs one. If your child has life-threatening symptoms, please call 9-1-1 or get them to the nearest emergency room immediately.

Doctor's offices are great resources for numerous routine things such as testing, yearly checkups, well-child visits, immunizations, and helping with chronic conditions such as asthma, but only a few patients think of their doctor's office for a sick visit.

The difference between these visits is in the title, but for your doctor to understand what is wrong with your child, they must also see them at the office for their regularly scheduled well visits.

An example of a well visit is a yearly health check, routine immunizations, and a developmental milestone assessment. When the doctor has a baseline of good health for your child, it is much easier to see when something is wrong with your child at a sick visit.

First-time and seasoned parents sometimes need clarification on whether the doctor's office should see their sick child. Here are some excellent guidelines for signs and symptoms when your child can use a sick visit appointment versus the ER.

  • A fever of 103 or above
  • Infants under age 3 months/a rectal fever higher than 100.4
  • Infant/decreased urination/no urination in eight hours
  • No urine output in 12 hours for toddlers/older children
  • Labored breathing/grunting seen in infants
  • Infant's/refusal to eat twice in a row
  • Older children/two hours of stomach pain/worsening stomach pain/know pain location/lower right abdomen; please call us immediately.
  • Signs of dehydration
  • Severe headache
  • Extreme irritability in infants

When calling our office for a sick visit appointment, please remind us of any existing conditions, such as diabetes or asthma. Your child should have a medical history we can review for pre-existing conditions. Being prepared with a list of signs and symptoms seen in your child is also very helpful for our staff.
